PRESENT SITUATION

The indigenist Elimilton Correia de Alencar says, in his report, that the current situation of the Amanayé is the result of the abandonment in which they were left by SPI and Funai - Fundação Nacional do Índio (National Foundation for the Indian), because they had to face practically alone the contact with national society. The tutorial organs watched, without doing anything, the invasion of their lands and their removal from them, and made no contacts with the isolated Amanayé.

On June 19, 1998, the government signed the directive that created a Technical Group of studies and identification of the land of the Amanayé Indians in the municipality of Goianésia do Pará, State of Pará. These studies have not been completed and approved by Funai's Land Department yet.

Written after a text published in the series Povos Indígenas no Brasil, number 8 - Sudeste do Pará (Tocantins); and report by Elimilton Correia de Alencar, 4ª Suer - Funai, October 1990.
