The Xerente, whose self-designation is Akwe,
form, along with the Xavante (self-designation A'we)
of Mato Grosso, the central branch of the societies of
the Jê language family. The Xacriabá, presently
located in Minas Gerais, and Acroás (extinct),
are also considered groups which are culturally and linguistically
related to them. According to the most accepted version,
the name Xerente was attributed to them by non-Indians,
por the purpose of differentiating them from other Akwe,
particularly the Xavante. |
