The Sabiá Center and the Socioenvironmental Institute (ISA)In partnership with Projetemos, they will be installing projections on buildings this Tuesday, April 28th, National Caatinga Day. The initiative aims to highlight the climate adaptation solutions developed by the Caatinga biome, which many are still unaware of. The projections will take place between 18 PM and 20 PM in the cities of São Paulo, Brasília, and Recife.
The Caatinga is present in a large part of the Northeast and in northern Minas Gerais, a region with almost 30 million people, making it the most populous semi-arid zone in the world. It occupies 11% of the national territory and is an exclusively Brazilian biome, full of resilient species that hibernate during droughts and store water in their roots. But with the first rain, a powerful flowering transforms the white forest into an explosion of colors, capable of neutralizing more carbon than other Brazilian biomes, showing life and resilience. In times of climate crisis, the knowledge of the Caatinga reflects centuries of experiences that are concrete answers of adaptation for Brazil and the world.
The projections alluding to Caatinga Day provoke and inspire reflection with a call to this historically invisible biome. The production of poison-free food, banks of native seeds, and agroforestry systems working towards environmental recovery, among other actions resulting from public policies achieved over the last 30 years, have transformed people's lives, fostering a harmonious coexistence full of learning experiences encompassing the environment, the economy, and development.
Many of these experiences can be enjoyed in the second edition of Caatinga Climate Week, which is scheduled to take place between July 1st and 3rd, 2026, in the Agreste region of Pernambuco. Unlike climate weeks around the world, this event's panels are led by people in their own territories, sharing practical adaptation solutions and placing the Caatinga biome at the center of the climate debate.
Save the Caatinga Campaign
With the goal of raising public awareness about preserving the Semi-Arid Forest and denouncing deforestation and wildfire crimes, the Sabiá Center launched the permanent campaign "Save the Caatinga" in 2022.
